On 10th November 1659, at the foothills of Pratapgad Fort, one of the most dramatic encounters in Indian history unfolded.
This diorama captures the exact moment when Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, facing the formidable Bijapur general Afzal Khan, turned a carefully planned assassination attempt into a legendary victory. Believing he had trapped the young Maratha leader, Afzal Khan embraced Shivaji Maharaj under the guise of diplomacy. Hidden beneath his royal attire, however, Shivaji Maharaj was prepared for treachery.
As Afzal Khan struck first, Shivaji Maharaj responded with unmatched courage and precision. In a single decisive movement, he unleashed his concealed weapon, changing the course of history forever.
Meticulously sculpted to preserve the intensity, motion, and emotion of this historic confrontation, this collector’s diorama immortalizes the moment when strategy, bravery, and determination triumphed against overwhelming odds.
By 1659, the growing influence of Shivaji Maharaj had become a serious challenge to the Adilshahi Sultanate of Bijapur. Determined to crush the rising Maratha movement, the Sultan dispatched his most feared commander, Afzal Khan, with a massive army.
Confident in his strength, Afzal Khan marched through the Deccan, destroying temples and settlements along his path, hoping to provoke Shivaji Maharaj into an open battle. Instead, Shivaji Maharaj remained within the strategic defenses of Pratapgad Fort, forcing Afzal Khan into a position of uncertainty.
Unable to lure the Marathas into direct combat, Afzal Khan proposed a diplomatic meeting, assuring both sides that they would meet unarmed and accompanied by only a few attendants.
Shivaji Maharaj understood the danger. Knowing that betrayal was likely, he arrived wearing concealed armor beneath his garments and carried hidden weapons for protection.
As the two leaders met inside a specially prepared pavilion, Afzal Khan suddenly attempted to seize and kill Shivaji Maharaj. The attack failed against the concealed armor. In the split second that followed, Shivaji Maharaj countered with lightning speed, striking back and breaking Afzal Khan’s advantage.
The signal for battle was given. Maratha forces hidden throughout the forests and hills surrounding Pratapgad launched a coordinated assault upon Afzal Khan’s army. What had begun as a trap for Shivaji Maharaj became a decisive Maratha victory.
The encounter transformed Shivaji Maharaj from a regional leader into a symbol of resistance and inspired countless warriors to join the cause of Swarajya.
“Vadh of Afzal Khan” is more than a battle scene. It is a tribute to courage, preparation, leadership, and the unwavering spirit that helped shape the foundation of the Maratha Empire. This diorama captures a moment that forever altered the course of Indian history.
